Mass document processing with open source ERP

Norbert WesselBlog

“Time is money”. This slogan is equally valid for the fresh produce sector. An unnecessary loss of time and money originates in employees waiting for documents to be generated, for instance in order to start loading a 40-ton truck. Users are not willing to spend unproductive time waiting for delivery notes, invoices, etc. to be prepared, let alone interrupt their work processes during the waiting time.

As an open source ERP software, metasfresh ERP fulfills all the requirements regarding fast and trouble-free document generation. This is due to the process as a whole being user-initiated but then sent through simultaneous processing stages on the server.
Thus, after having initiated the process, users may move on to the next task straight away. Moreover, a large number of documents can be processed in very short periods of time. Once a document generation task is completed, the relevant user is proactively notified and, where required, the result is automatically sent to the appropriate printer.

So much for the theory. The following test scenario shows how efficient metasfresh ERP really is when it comes to the generation of documents.
10 invoices are being generated on a server as fast as a state-of-the-art smartphone.

The hardware structure comprises the following:

  • Microserver (10 W power consumption)
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Intel Celeron N2930 2.1 GHz
  • 16 GB mSata SSD
  • Passive cooling

The following software is employed:

  • Ubuntu 14.04
  • Postgres 9.3
  • metasfresh ERP 4.1 RC1

The result demonstrates the performance of metasfresh ERP:

With metasfresh ERP, mass documents can be processed without excessively consuming server resources or interrupting the user’s workflow. The 10 invoices are completed in less than 10 seconds. The user may simultaneously keep on working or handling other tasks in metasfresh ERP. Extrapolated over a period of one month, 2.5 million invoice documents could be generated with a 10-Watt server without affecting the user or generating unnecessary costs.

This test proves that metasfresh ERP, as a free open source ERP software, is an attractive alternative to spending a lot of money for expensive ERP systems in order to get a powerful ERP software for cost reduction and business control.

The following demo video (German) shows the details of the test:
